Akwaaba!

June 6, 2012

We successfully landed!!  Around 1:30pm Ghana time.  We were met by Peace Corps staff who helped us get through customs and onto the bus that would take us to the place we would be staying at for the rest of the week (Valley View University).  Once we got to Valley View, we picked roommates and rooms and unloaded our stuff.  My roommate for this week is Sam who is pretty much just like me and pretty much awesome.  So it works out perfectly!  We were then told dinner would be served at 6pm.  We had a few hours to kill, so we decided to walk around the compound.  We saw some weird looking centipedes, and Joshua picked one up.  All it did was curl into a ball and didn’t move.  We later learned that those little guys bite.  Oops.  On our way back to dinner, it started to rain.  Agatha (who is a Peace Corps staff member from Ghana), grabbed all of us and told us we needed to get out of the rain or we would catch a cold.  So we stood underneath a gazebo for about 10 minutes talking and laughing and taking pictures.  As the rain let up, we walked back and had dinner with everyone.  We then had a group meeting learning what the schedule would look like the rest of the week, and we also played a game that I feel none of us were in the mood for.  We were all exhausted, and unfortunately for me, I was feeling a bit jet lagged and was dizzy and lightheaded for most of the night.  We finished the game, and listened to some closing remarks.  Sam and I went back to the room where we were about 4 seconds away from passing out.  We were going through our clothes to decide what to wear the next day.  Sam moved her luggage to get a better view and saw something on the wall.  It was a tiny little lizard.  We wondered if it was still alive, so I hit the wall close to where it was and it bolted at approximately 184 mph.  We thought about how we would get it out of our room, but opted on just leaving it alone, joking that we would probably wake up with it on our face or in our mouth.  I showered in ice cold water, dried off with my very American towel, and called it a night.  What an exhausting trip so far, and we haven’t even done anything!  Guess that just shows how the rest of the week will be.
